Landed cost in Ghana: every charge from ship to shop

The price that matters is what the goods cost on your floor, not on the supplier's invoice. Here is how to build that number.

The short answer

Landed cost is the total cost of getting goods into your warehouse in Ghana: product cost, international freight and insurance, import duty and taxes, terminal and shipping-line charges, clearing agency fees and inland delivery. Duty and taxes are often the largest single addition, but port-side charges and delays can change the result significantly.

The six layers of landed cost

2. Freight and insuranceOcean or air freight, insurance, origin chargesCarrier / forwarder
3. Duty and taxesImport duty, levies, NHIL, GETFund, VATGRA
4. Port and terminalTerminal handling, storage beyond free time, examinationTerminal operator
5. Shipping lineDelivery order, container deposit, detention beyond free daysShipping line
6. Clearing and deliveryAgency fee, haulage, container returnClearing agent / haulier

Costs that catch importers out

  • Demurrage and terminal rent from late documents or permits
  • Container detention when the empty box is returned late
  • Valuation uplifts that increase duty
  • Exchange-rate movement between order and assessment
  • Unplanned examination and re-handling

How to control it

  1. Buy on FOB or FCA where practical so you control freight.
  2. Confirm the HS code before you order.
  3. Get permits in place before shipping.
  4. Send documents during the voyage.
  5. Ask for a quote that separates government charges from service charges.

Start with the duty calculator, then check overstay risk with the demurrage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest part of landed cost?

For dutiable consumer goods, duty and taxes are often the largest addition after the product itself.

Is the clearing agent's fee a big share?

Usually not. Delays cost far more than the agency fee, which is why document preparation matters.

Should I price in cedis or dollars?

Duty is assessed in cedis at the ICUMS rate, while freight and line charges are often in dollars. Budget both and allow for exchange movement.
