The short answer
Air freight moves cargo into Ghana in days rather than weeks. 7AS Trust books air cargo from any origin into Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, clears it through ICUMS at the airport cargo terminals and delivers it, often the same day as release for simple entries.
When air freight pays for itself
- A production line or mine is down waiting for a part
- The goods are perishable or temperature-sensitive
- The value is high relative to weight (electronics, pharmaceuticals)
- A sales deadline or project milestone cannot slip
How air freight is priced
Airlines charge on chargeable weight: the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is commonly calculated as length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6,000. Bulky, light cargo therefore costs more than its scale weight suggests.
Example: a 60 kg carton measuring 120 × 80 × 100 cm has a volumetric weight of 160 kg, so you pay for 160 kg. Repacking to reduce volume can cut the bill.
Clearance at KIA
Air cargo is cleared on ICUMS like sea cargo, with the airway bill in place of the bill of lading. Regulated goods (medicines, food, cosmetics, telecoms equipment) still need the relevant permits, so send them before the flight lands. See the Kotoka Airport page.
Exports by air
Fresh produce, samples and documents out of Accra, with export declarations, phytosanitary certificates where needed and airline booking.
Frequently asked questions
How fast can air cargo be cleared at KIA?
Simple, fully documented entries can be released the same or next working day. Regulated goods depend on permit checks.
What is chargeable weight?
The higher of actual weight and volumetric weight (L×W×H in cm ÷ 6,000). Airlines bill on whichever is greater.
Do you handle courier-sized parcels?
Yes, for commercial consignments. Very small personal parcels are usually cheaper through an express courier.
